The 2026-2027 Common Read is Nora Krug鈥檚 Diaries of War: Two Visual Accounts from Ukraine and Russia, published in 2023. Described by the publisher as 鈥減owerful graphic journalism,鈥 this book explores, through text and illustrations, the contrasting life experiences of a Ukrainian journalist and an anti-war Russian artist during the first year of the on-going Ukrainian-Russian War.  The Common Read Committee, composed of faculty, staff, administration, and students, believes that this timely graphic narrative, focused on a contemporary issue that students are aware of and care about, will become an impactful shared academic experience for incoming students and will offer rich opportunities for dynamic and engaging programming.

While Diaries of War is easy-to-read and visually appealing, it does not shy away from difficult aspects of living through times of war. The book raises questions about what it means to be politically active, highlights the importance of journalism and other forms of storytelling, and explores how people create a sense of home and belonging in new spaces. Krug鈥檚 narrative encourages readers to look deeper into this devastating conflict and think about the various ways that people鈥檚 lives, families, jobs, and even sense of identity are affected by it. The book will certainly help to foster the 麻豆视频 100 pillar of expansive community, and, in reading this book, students will learn more about the world. I鈥檓 also excited to report that Nora Krug will be coming to campus for our Common Read Event on September 16th.

Diaries of War: Two Visual Accounts from Ukraine and Russia will be an eye-opening and impactful Common Read for the first-year students, as well as the Marist Community as a whole, and will generate important and necessary discussion about global conflict for students, faculty, and staff alike.
